October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
Knowledge is power. Help save lives and help raise awareness about breast cancer during National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The more we know about the disease and how to treat it, the better able we are to stop it. Check out what you need to know about breast cancer and how you can take preventative measures.
About Breast Cancer.
Breast cancer is the abnormal growth of breast tissue that forms tumors. This abnormal tissue growth can then spread to the rest of the body, causing serious health issues. Breast cancer will affect one in eight women at some point in their lives, and is one of the biggest threats to women's health. Breast cancer affects all women of all ages. However, the disease generally affects older women. Be vigilant. While the disease often appears without symptoms, there are a variety of warning signs to be wary of. If you notice any lumps in the breasts or underarms, changes in the shape of your breasts, or nipple discharge, make an appointment to see your doctor.
Preventative Measures.
While you can't prevent the disease, you can take steps to reduce your risk and detect the disease early. Living a healthy lifestyle can reduce your risk for breast cancer. Exercise regularly, get a full eight hours of sleep, reduce your alcohol intake, and limit your exposure to known carcinogens and unnecessary radiation. That way you can lower your risk of developing breast cancer. Early detection is key in beating the disease. Talk to your doctor about a screening program that's right for you. From mammograms to self-exams, the more aware you are of your body, the sooner you can catch any changes.
